Why does it sound like the people working on AI are describing this as a non-human entity in a box? Sounds extremely dangerous. Do these AI models lie and/or deceive people?

OK, that's alarming. Do they have any idea what they are dealing with?
And according to current AI research the LLM is a black box that they don't understand. This isn't like other software with code made to be readable, remember they say "grown", and these models now have trillions of parameters.
When the AI labs have gone to "fix" the lying/deception levels, and then release the models to everyone, claiming they have an "aligned model", was the lying/deception issue with the model now "fixed", or is the model just hiding it differently, for example a more subtle deception?
So let me get this straight: something extremely dangerous and the AI labs are moving recklessly fast. Does this only affect adults? Wait, some people are encouraging children to talk to these?!
Maybe this is a big deal and we should ask God how to proceed. Jesus Christ is KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. I'm also going to open my Bible and refresh my memory.
